Mom SOS

*warning: this post is not for the faint of heart or weak of stomach.*

I need help from all you more experienced moms.

Lance seems to have a little stomach bug-- he woke up two nights ago vomiting, and he's had diarrhea for two days now. I can't get him to eat very much solid food AT ALL. I managed to get him to eat a few grapes earlier, but that's all he's had all day. I've been trying the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apples, tea and toast,) but he'll have none of it. So in lieu of food, I've been giving him lots of liquids- mostly milk and gatorade, for the electrolytes. Should I worry about him not eating, or is this normal? Aside from the messy diapers, he doesn't seem to be in any discomfort. He's just as energetic as always!

This is the first time he's been sick like this- even as a newborn, he was never a pukey baby. Hardly ever spat up. So I'm at a loss for what to do!

Thanks in advance!

Mom said no to worry about him not eating too much. She said Yay to Gatorade but to hold off on milk as it can be difficult to digest. She said mild foods like crackers might work. I'm sure he'll be fine. Send my love to the little squirt!

You may want to try some pedialyte or the generic just so he doesn't get dehydrated.

I'm catching up on blogs this weekend, so since you posted this a couple days ago this may no longer apply, but anywho . . .

Sorry to hear he's going through this. At least his temperament doesn't sound to down . . .

When my kids faced stomach bugs they seemed to often have the diarrhea about a week (by about day 3 they were on the mend, but the runny diapers lasted longer). Rule of thumb . . . 3 wet diapers in 24 hours is minimum goal. Any fewer and you should be concerned about dehydration. Obviously, if they are fevery or extremely lethargic numbers are less significant, I always go with my gut (not what may be coming out of theirs).

One thing that helps my kids incredibly (when I can get it in their system) is apple cider vinegar. I make like a tea with honey or sugar and hot water with a little vinegar and this has an amazing impact on stomach bugs. Probiotics help also, but not as quickly.

Hope he is already on the mend!

Yeah, I'm days late too, but like the ladies before me, I hope your baby is all well now.
Yeah, a couple days of not eating anything is OK. Dehaydration is the only thing to be watching for . . . and I've found that generally speaking, when nothing else is going down I usually can tempt them with pringles. Oh, but you've got a baby? Pringles wouldn't be such a hot idea then . . .:-)

I'm hoping he's better. But just in case he's not.

SIPS of Pedialyte and don't worry too much about the foods.

Look for signs of dehydration- Lethargy, decreased urine output less than urines a day, dull sunken eyes, decreased skin turgor. If it's all wrinkled and puckery that's not good.
